Usually when I see a familiar face from my childhood I get uncomfortable.
Does this happen to anyone else, or am I alone? If I haven’t seen someone in 10 or 20 years it feels kind of weird talking to them, because they do not seem like the same person.
After 20 years a friend becomes a stranger, right? This happened to me very recently, when I ran into Jenny while I was in the middle of a job. I will admit that I tried a little harder than normal, because I always had a crush on Jenny, and she had become more beautiful than ever. She was a rich dentist, and I was a blue collar HVAC tech there to work on the system in her office. It had been so long since I’d seen Jenny that I didn’t even recognize her name on the HVAC work order. She was very surprised to see me, even though she knew that I was a professional HVAC tech. We exchanged small talk for a while and then I got down to the business of fixing the cooling system while she returned to her patients. I will admit that I took my sweet time, and the very basic HVAC system maintenance that was needed took twice as long as it normally does. Now that I had seen Jenny again I just lollygagged my way through the HVAC inspection so I could listen to her sweet voice. I toyed with the idea of asking her out, but instead decided to make an appointment to have her look at my teeth.
