I had to call my wife to pick me up at the hospital last week.
An ambulance had taken me to the hospital, and my car was at the HVAC company.
By the time my wife got to the hospital, she was panicking. No one had told her exactly what happened, and she was imagining the worst. My boss was waiting for her to arrive and trying to calm her down. She asked what happened, and he told her I had an accident while going to the back of a house to repair an air conditioning unit. There was a toy truck hidden in the long grass in the backyard. I caught the car under my foot, landed face first on a toy truck, and my leg twisted, breaking my knee and ankle. I was embarrassed and upset for not looking more closely, especially since the grass was wet, which made my fall more dangerous. I had no control over my feet. I was upset when my wife laughed, but then she stopped when she saw me. I had stitches over my eye, which was already turning black and blue. They were preparing me for surgery on my knee and telling her they would apply a cast to my foot and lower leg while in surgery. I never thought of HVAC as a dangerous job, but then I never encountered a yard with foot long grass filled with trucks and cars. When I get back to work again, I’m going to tell the dispatcher to let people know they need to keep dogs in the house and mow their lawns before the HVAC technician arrives.
