Our child has played soccer since she was old enough to run after a ball. She’s in middle school now, but she never stopped playing; she enjoys the game at school, she’s on a travel team, and she even endures the pitch in the tepid summer. Our home is in weather conditions where it’s warm for 12 months, so summers are extreme here, and you can’t move from the front door of your home to your car without getting drenched in sweat! Last summer’s soccer season was recognizably hard, with a weekend tournament that’s totally unforgettable for her and her teammates. The event was a three-day tournament while in the heat, and it hadn’t rained for about a month. We were also in the midst of a heat wave, with heat indexes reaching 110 degrees. The tournament continued all day, for three afternoons, and she played at least three games all day. After the first day of the tournament, the team came home with us to unwind and grab some popcorn. We’d never seen anyone worship an AC unit the way these teenagers did that day. They sat around the vents, trying their hardest to get a whiff of cool, dry air. When the fan would stop once the home reached the temperature set on the temperature control, they would complain and ask us to turn it down. Luckily we have a pretty efficient HVAC unit, so we didn’t mind cranking down the temperature. The blistering heat continued for the next 2 afternoons of the tournament, and the team came back to our place at the end of every day to gather at the altar of the mighty AC.
