My son has played soccer since he was old enough to kick a ball. He’s in high school now, but he never stopped playing; he plays at school, he’s on a travel team, and he even endures the pitch in the hot summer. We live in a climate where it’s warm year-round, so summers are brutal here. You can’t walk from the front door of your house to your car without dripping in sweat! Last summer soccer season was particularly brutal, with one weekend tournament that will never be forgotten by my son and his teammates. It was a three-day tournament during the summer, and it hadn’t rained in weeks. We were also experiencing a heat wave, with heat indexes reaching 110 degrees! The tournament lasted all day, for three days, and my son played at least three games throughout the day. After the first day of the tournament, the team came home with us to decompress and grab some snacks. I’ve never seen anyone worship an A/C vent the way these kids did that day! They crowded around the vents, trying their hardest to get a whiff of cool, dry air. When the fan would turn off once the house reached the temperature set on the thermostat, they would groan and ask me to turn it down. Luckily I have a pretty efficient cooling system, so I didn’t mind cranking down the temperature. The blistering heat continued for the next two days of the tournament, and the team came back to my place at the end of every day to worship at the altar of my air conditioner.
