My parents have been living at home by themselves for about five years.
I was the last of my siblings to move out, and it was really tough on them.
We still visit frequently, but it’s not the same as it was when we were living there. Being at home by themselves was hard on their marriage for a while, but they’ve learned to reconnect and find that spark within their relationship again. They made some renovations in the home to better suit their needs since we didn’t need our rooms anymore. A neighbor told them that they should consider switching their air conditioning system. They’ve had a central HVAC since they moved into the house 34 years ago, so they were very skeptical about it. But our neighbor said that when their kids moved out, they switched over to a ductless HVAC instead. The switch made a lot of sense for them because the kids’ old rooms were no longer being used and didn’t need air conditioning and heat streaming to them all of the time. Ductless HVACs allowed them to put indoor units in each room, and only keep the ones turned on them they frequently use. The indoors units in the other bedrooms are only turned on when they know they have guests coming to spend the night so that way they have fresh air conditioning. My parents thought this was a great idea and called their HVAC technician to get quotes! They were able to install the ductless HVAC system for a good price, and it helped bring their electric bill down tremendously. I’m really happy for them!
